sam's class got to go on a field trip to a place called merry lea farm back in september. it was such a neat and beautiful place. on wikipedia it said it is, "1150 acres (4.6 km²) that include most of northern Indiana's ecosystems including peat bogs, swamp maple forest, upland mesic forest, old field, prairie, and lakeshore. Merry Lea is the largest privately held land reserve in the state of Indiana. The center serves as a field laboratory for students at Goshen College who are studying ecology, environmental education and agroecology. In addition, Merry Lea provides environmental educational experiences for elementary students." it was such a neat experience. elliot went with his class 2 years ago, but that was right when calder was born so i didn't get to go, but my mom was in town at the time and went with elliot.
as part of the tour the kids got to grind up apples and make apple cider.
they got to feed some of the animals - there were pigs, tukeys, goats, etc.
we went on a straw ride.
we got to roast hot dogs and smores over a fire pit. here is sam and his teacher mrs. huttsell.
they also learned how people used to cook with wood stoves, how they'd warm the water in the wood stove, how they'd take a bath right there in the kitchen - the family all using the same water - dad going last because he was usually the dirtiest from working on the farm. they learned about how they would save the ash to get lye to then make soap. they got to play with some toys that kids living on a farm would have played with. i kind of felt like i was back in nauvoo going to all the homes they have there that show what life was like for the saints in the 1840's. it was neat and sam had a blast. the people who worked there were just fantastic with the kids. i love that indiana has things like this for my kids.

My kids always loved this field trip. Isn't Mrs. Huttsell the best? Love her.
Merry Lea is where took a homeschool trip and we butchered chickens and turkeys last year:) It is a great place!
